PECULIAR BLUE

Peculiar Blue are a four piece Acoustic / Electroacoustic / Indie band that have been performing around the UK and Europe for over 10 years.
Their blend of heart warming and thought provoking love ‘n’ life songs has been insighting audiences around the UK and Europe now for around 10 years.
In that time they have established themselves as one of Yorkshire's front running acoustic trios and gained a loyal and ever extending fan base.
Their music is an avenue to air their own life experiences, and the experiences of friends, family and situations around them.

The band are always willing to think out of the box when producing music and this is very evident on their forthcoming third album release ‘How You Could Leave’ Now available worldwide.
The album is a real eclectic blend of acoustic music, including the use of Paul's extensive acoustic guitar collection, drums, percussion, trumpets, vintage organs, cello and piano with guest performances from some of Yorkshire's finest up and coming musicians.

The album has had some great comments -

“Beautiful South meets Damien Rice, an outstanding collection of heart-warming songs from this Yorkshire duo…”

"Melancholy and sweet yet dark and powerful, a real interesting listen. Songs I can’t get out of my head…”

You can check out some of the songs off the album along with the bands full EP - 'We All Go Down Together' at the band's Soundcloud page:

Peculiar Blue are very active on the live music scene and play scores of gigs each year. They travel far and wide where necessary but mainly play gigs within the Yorkshire region.
Peculiar Blue play a mix of original material and covers but they certainly don’t play run of mill covers, “We dare to play the songs we like rather than the usual songs every one is sick of hearing.”

BARROW HAVEN FUNDRAISER EVENT

BARROW HAVEN FLOOD FUNDRAISER

On December 5th 2013, a tidal surge caused Barrow Haven, on the south bank of the river Humber, to flood. Its community was hit very hard, the devastation meant they were evacuated and unable to return to their homes. They were forced to spend Christmas elsewhere and many of them lost Christmas presents they had put beneath their trees for their loved ones. Despite their best efforts, the river destroyed everything these people owned and they have been told they will not be able to return to their homes for at least another 6 months. Having seen, first-hand, the effects of the flood I can tell you the scenes of the aftermath are heartbreaking. Something needs to be done to help these poor people.

The Barrow Haven Fundraiser Event has been organised by The Rotary Club Of Barrow Meridian and its associates to raise some much needed money to help those who have fallen victim to the weather.

On Friday 28th February 2014 there will be a very special event at the fabulous New Queens Club, Queen Street, Barton-upon-Humber, DN18 5QP.

A BIT ABOUT THE ARTISTS... Crooked Weather

CROOKED WEATHER (Featured on the CD)

Crooked Weather is an East-Yorkshire based folk band that has a distinct, earthy and just a little bit of an unruly sound. They sparked into life in Hull early in 2013. By June they had recorded their debut album, ‘Quantum Mango’, with the prolific Stewart Baxter (of Warren Records) and with the veteran producer John Cox in his hallowed Cupboard studio. The result is consummate Crooked Weather, equal parts chops, unruliness and earthy rhythm. Above all, it finds these men poised intriguingly between youth and experience; on the cusp of something.
2013 was a busy year post Quantum Mango for Crooked Weather. As well as appearing on various radio shows, including BBC Radio Humberside a number of times, they also played a number of festivals during the summer. These included Hull Folk Festival, Galtres Parklands festival and they headlined at Cottingham Springboard Festival. By the end of November Crooked Weather were invited back into the BBC to perform a live session with the champion of new Yorkshire music Alan Raw. “Crooked Weather have become a big part of the East-Yorkshires music scene”, Alan Raw.
Now in 2014 Crooked Weather is looking forward to an exciting year having already laid down the foundations for their second album. They are looking to complete this in time for the busy festival season.

A BIT ABOUT THE ARTISTS... Tim O'Connor

TIM O'CONNOR

Tim O'Connor is an English Folk/Rock singer, songwriter and guitarist who has been performing and recording since the late Seventies. His earliest musical influences were John Renbourn, Roy Harper, The Kinks, The Pretty Things, Jethro Tull, Yes and Led Zeppelin. Tim grew up on the coast of Holderness in East Yorkshire, listening to the rhythms of the waves and calls of the seagulls. At age 14 a school friend showed Tim how to play a very basic boogie rif on guitar, and the Bug had bit hard! Tim started to write his own songs pretty much from day one. Tim began performing publicly with the band 'English Films', from Withernsea, in the late 70s, playing original rock songs written by Tim and Derek Pearson. Then some stuff happened and Tim woke up this morning! How rock and roll is that? Though now recognised as a solo performer, Tim O'Connor fronted the band cowfisH for 20 years until 2013, when having disbanded, cowfisH became the recording vehicle for his more rock oriented compositions. Tim now lives in the Yorkshire city of Hull in the UK, which he finds strangely refreshing. He has released a large catalogue of albums, 27 to date, available on his record label, Uilleand Music. Tim's latest album, released August 2013, is 'where the monsters live' on Uilleand Music, and is available for download at timoconnor1.bandcamp.com

A BIT ABOUT THE ARTISTS... Scott Wainwright

SCOTT WAINWRIGHT (Featured on the CD)

Scott Wainwright, Blues mystic, rural songsmith and Folk myth, endlessly blends Gospel, Blues, Hip Hop and Folk song idioms into something both primitive and highly futuristic.
All of Scott’s songs have been channelled from some other worldly source or have been found ageing in a barrel buried in the woods.
Solo performances find Scott using acoustic guitar, voice, harmonica and foot stomps as a framework for his songs. The occasional instrumental guitar piece often appears in his live sets, making for a varied listening experience.
Scott has released countless EP's, several singles, two albums and a compilation album of his early solo work. His songs have been played on numerous UK radio stations, several American radio shows and as part of an Art Exhibition in New Zealand.

A BIT ABOUT THE ARTISTS... Carrie Martin

CARRIE MARTIN

Carrie grew up to the sound of Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, Brenda Lee and Gilbert O’Sullivan to name but a few. Her mum was always singing around the house and her dad, also a guitar vocalist, would practice his set on a Saturday afternoon. Early memories see her jigging around him, singing harmonies, probably more a hindrance than a help.
Carrie's first guitar was actually bought for her older brother Steve, who despite their dad’s best efforts to get him playing preferred playing ‘air guitar’ along with the ‘Rubettes’. It was her mum who eventually pointed out to my dad that he was teaching the wrong child. Having established this I flourished with a guitar in hand and my dad became, and probably always will be, my biggest fan.
After absorbing everything her dad could teach her, Carrie joined the school guitar club learning to finger pick such classics as ‘Annie’s Song’ and ‘Streets Of London’. Not long after that she began to song write, usually love songs - quite a common subject for a girl of that age. She played her songs live on Radio Humberside and recorded her first cassette, as it was then, at just 13 years old.
She left school at 16, becoming a trainee hairdresser but still played at local clubs. At 21 the guitar went in the attic and Carrie fronted a rock band. Belting out ‘Def Leppard’,  ‘Bon Jovi’, ’Heart’ and ‘Vixen’, in all, Carrie fronted three rock bands ‘Foreign Affair’ ‘Ecstasy’ and ‘The Promise’.
Still having a passion for music after having some time out to marry and raise a family, Carrie performed a couple of one off gigs for charity with local 80′s band Passion Spent, raising money for the special care baby unit that cared for her boys and for Motor Neurone Disease which tragically claimed the life of a close friend. She spent time in the studio recording tracks with ex band mate Paul Pexton but the guitar stayed in the attic.
It was only a chance meeting with her ex English teacher ‘Garry Burnett’ that Carrie returned to her solo acoustic roots. She bumper into Garry - an amazing instrumental guitarist - at an open mic session and remembering that Carrie played, he asked her to do a song or two. She hadn’t played for 20 years! "Once you've played a guitar it’s always in you", so Carrie booked lessons with her son's guitar tutor ‘John Shepherd’, a fabulous guitarist, and it soon came back to her.  "It was like finding an old friend." ... She has been delighting audiences with her playing ever since!

A BIT ABOUT THE ARTISTS.... Paul Culkin

PAUL CULKIN

Paul began playing guitar while at school in the 1960's. His influences are blues, ragtime, vaudeville and The Beatles. He has been playing ukulele for 23 years and has made 3 television appearances and has featured in numerous local radio shows. In his time he has also written radio jingles and music for the theatre. This man's songs are genius and full of observational humour. With his ukelele he is a modern day George Formby - you'll love him!!

A BIT ABOUT THE ARTISTS... Chris Martin

CHRIS MARTIN

Chris (the man in a hat) Martin is something of an enigma, having been found in a hand bag on Batley railway station many years ago. He was educated by the finest minds in Europe and can speak fluently in 32 languages and dialects, holds degrees in both metaphysical theology and drawing with big crayons. Musically he is a blues shouter and guitarist, playing slide and finger style and also lap style. Throughout a long and varied musical career, spanning well in excess of a year and a half he has both thrilled and puzzled audiences the world over (well, around Yorkshire). He may well talk more than he plays, but whatever happens someone should have a good time. If there’s nowt on’t telly and it’s not raining, go and see him - at least you’ll get a free Jaffa cake.

A BIT ABOUT THE ARTISTS.... Gary Grainger

GARY GRAINGER (Featured on the CD)

Gary’s musical apprenticeship began in the working men’s clubs of the North East of England in the early seventies where, among other stories too wild to tell here, he supported Bill Haley & The Comets. At the same time a revolution was happening in his head – he’d listened to radio shows by Mike Raven, Alexis Korner & John Peel – and he heard THE BLUES. Since that time the blues has been a strong influence on everything Gary has played – one Country & Western Band leader told Gary: “Stop Playing The Blues – or go join a Blues Band” – advice which Gary promptly followed.

But it has always been acoustic music in general, and the Blues in particular, that have held their place in Gary’s heart and he currently presents an eclectic mix of Blues and Americana at pubs and festivals around the North East of England.

Gary’s current acoustic set includes a mixture of traditional & modern blues tunes, featuring Gary’s lived-in voice & dextrous fingerpicking & slide guitar. His set also includes songs not so much from left field, rather from the West Coast – of the USA. Gary features songs by bands such as Little Feat, Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers - & ZZ Top!

In 2012, Gary headlined the Acoustic Stage at Durham Blues Festival when he played guitar for Jo Harman, and has played recent support slots with Guy Tortora and Kirsten Thien (both from the USA), Mitch Laddie, Virgil & The Accelerators, Trevor Sewell & Dave Arcari.

2013 festival gigs include Durham & Cleethorpes Blues Festivals, Maryport, Colne (where he presented The British Blues Awards) & Newark (where he was also main stage MC). Now in his 60th year, Gary has decided it is time to record his solo CD, which should be available at this summer’s gigs.

A BIT ABOUT THE ARTISTS... Julian Socha

JULIAN SOCHA

In his mid twenties he moved to Sheffield and joined a band called Precious who were managed by ex Simply Red bass guitarist Shaun Ward. They gigged all over the UK and supported bands like Corduroy and The Lighthouse Family and opened for Wet Wet Wet at the Sheffield Arena. To broaden his experience further during this time he was also regularly working with innovative solo artists, DJs and musicians such as Future Loop Foundation. He was regularly playing live while also gaining valuable experience in the studio. This was an essential learning curve for him and really encouraged him to develop his own writing. Julian then headed for Liverpool where he joined the band ManBreak. This turned out to be another major opportunity to work with some great musicians. ManBreak toured Europe with bands like Smashed Mouth. At some of the larger European festivals they found themselves on the same bill as artists as varied as Beck, Run DMC and Chumbawamba. In 1999 ManBreak recorded their second album 'Asphalt Culture' on the seminal label One Little Indian (one time home of Björk). The album was jointly produced by Bill Laswell (Sly & Robbie, PiL, Axiom Records etc.) in New York and Stephen Lironi (Altered Images, Creeping Bent) in London. The band received many favourable press reviews. The single Dark Age was single of the week in The Guardian newspaper while also gaining prolific Radio 1 airplay. Around about this time he was also working for Granada TV, writing and producing title and theme music for a variety of programmes and advertisements. Sadly ManBreak decided to call it a day so Julian then spent sometime playing guitar professionally on cruise ships where he played a wide variety of styles including pop, jazz and solo guitar... Soon he decided to develop his career as a solo artist. In 2005 he made a trip to the Dobro Festival in Slovakia and completely fell in love with the place, the people and the music. The music in particular had a huge impact on him and began to influence his own writing and direction. In 2008 Julian moved to Slovakia and formed a lasting friendship with the esteemed blues musician Peter 'Bonzo' Radványi, even being invited to play with his band: Bonzo And The Resonator – which included a number of established musicians from all over Slovakia. Julian was fortunate enough to build a fan-base for himself on the Slovakian blues scene and was able to play all over Slovakia at venues and festivals, large and small. Although he is now back living in the UK, Julian still maintains strong ties in Slovakia and The Czech Republic and plays there often.
In 2009 he recorded his first solo album 'Hiding Place', a collection of acoustic instrumental pieces which was shortly followed by his second album 'Light Exposure', again a collection of acoustic instrumentals. Julian recorded his third solo album 'Who Is The Man' in 2012. This album started off as an acoustic project but grew to include many new finger-style guitar pieces, along with some vocal numbers and some songs he produced with the full band treatment. Julian says his aim was to still keep the overall feel minimal and 'organic' sounding. His fourth album is called 'I'll Never Know' and is a collection of blues and country - both vocal and instrumental, with touches of the seductive sound of Slovakian folk. Living back in the UK has enabled Julian to establish himself on the thriving acoustic live scene. Although he loves recording, playing live has always been his first love.

Gary is from a mining village in west Yorkshire called Featherstone and has been playing guitar for about 20 years, but the last ten years has been more serious - he has managed to write at least 20 original songs which he is very proud of. Gary loves the acoustic sound and the idea of just a voice and a guitar. His influences include Paul Weller, Bob Dylan, Donovan, Fleetfoxes, Lindisfarne and The Verve. Last year was his first year of gigging live and he loved every minute of it.... this year looks like its going to be even better!!
